Designing a book cover using gestalt principles
In this first noroff assignment I was tasked with designing a book cover for Virginia Woolf “To the lighthouse”.
In this book the lighthouse represents a source of hope for the characters.
This book contains many different themes, for my assignment I decided to focus on the theme of “loss”. I focused on the main female protagonists who fears losing her son.
To show the contrast between motherly love and loss, I made a gestalt image of a mother holding an enfant which also looks like a skull. I created the gestalt image using white paper, I cut-out by hand and photographed over a dark background. I later took the photograph and edited it on photoshop, changing the white to a light-yellow colour representing the light from the lighthouse and turning the background to a deep blue representing uncertainty of the future and the sea. I received feedback from my teachers as I worked on this project, advising me on font and colour choice.

What I have learnt from this experience
This was our first assignment on the course and I feel that I have learnt a lot from this first project.
I learnt basics in indesign and photoshop where I made the book design and mockups. In addition to using editing software I also learnt about gestalt principles, and typography.
